The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays, was conferred upon Theresa Kulczak, Executive Director, Japan-America Society of Indiana, in recognition of her significant contribution to promoting friendly relations and mutual understanding between Japan and the United States.  The award was presented by The Honorable Toshiyuki Iwado, Consul-General of Japan in Chicago, on January 26th, and was celebrated by more than 200 JASI members, community and business leaders, family and friends at the Columbia Club in Indianapolis. 

Speakers included The Honorable Eric Holcomb, Governor of the State of Indiana; The Honorable Toshiyuki Iwado,Consul-General of Japan in Chicago; Jim Schellinger, Secretary of Commerce, State of Indiana; Peter Kelley, President, National Association of Japan America Societies; Melanie Walker, President, Japan-America Society of Indiana; Koji Morikawa, President, Indiana Japan Chamber; Pete Morse, Honorary Consul of Japan in Indianapolis; Robert Reynolds, Honorary Consul General of Japan Emeritus.

The program concluded with a presentation of the State of Indiana's Honorary Hoosier award to Consul-General of Japan Toshiyuki Iwado in appreciation for his friendship to Indiana.

Live music was provided by Kelley Niiyama, Clarinet Instructor, Indiana State University & HidetakaNiiyama, Pianist.  The National Anthem of the United States was performed by Craig Priebe, Associate Professor of Voice, Ball State University and the National Anthemof Japan was performed by Yoko Shimazaki-Kilburn, Voice Professor, Ball State University.
